Once upon a hollow moon, where silver rivers used to run,
I built a castle out of breaths you left behind when day was done.
The towers scraped the violet sky, all spun from sugar and from ache,
And every window held a lie I told myself for pity’s sake.
I planted forests in your name—the evergreens, they knew your voice,
They whispered that I lost the game the moment silence became choice.
The drawbridge moaned a lullaby composed of rust and dwindling light,
And still I swore I heard you sigh just on the other edge of night.
The clockmaker was made of glass; he wound the hours with a thread of frost.
He asked me why I let you pass, why I insisted love was cost.
I showed him gardens in the moat where swans of porcelain would glide—
They only sang one hollow note: the one who leaves first cannot hide.
A carousel of empty chairs spun gently in the eastern wing,
The horses wept their wooden tears for every bell I failed to ring.
And in the tallest, coldest room, a mirror held the ghost of us,
It showed your face through veils of gloom, and I just whispered, “Be just.”
But I know I shouldn’t miss you this way—
It’s a wound I keep dressing in silk and decay.
You were the language my bones learned to speak,
And I am the traitor who played it too meek.
I know you hate me for letting go first,
I drank the goodbye, now I’m dying of thirst.
And I don’t want forgiveness—I want you to know
That every calm breath is a counterfeit show.
I know I shouldn’t miss you… but I do.
God, I still do.
Beyond the hedge of blackened thorn, a village sank in endless snow,
And every chimney cried forlorn, “She loved him more than he could know.”
The baker kneaded sorrow’s flour, the children flew their kites of grief,
And I just waited hour by hour for some illusion of relief.
I tried to find your silhouette in flocks of crows against the gray,
I paid a minstrel for a debt to sing the words you’d never say.
He strummed a chord of perished spring, his voice a fractured, minor drone,
He made the frozen sparrows sing: “You built this winter all alone.”
Once on a stair of melted pearl, I found the ring I wouldn’t wear—
A simple, stubborn, frightened girl who dressed her panic up as care.
The balustrade was slick with tears I swore I’d never let you see,
I stacked the years like brittle spears to guard a weak and worthless me.
The fairytale required a beast, and so I sharpened my own claws,
I left before the final feast, before I had to face the cause.
And now the story’s pages burn in fireplaces made of blame,
There’s nothing left for you to learn except the spelling of my shame.
But I know I shouldn’t miss you this way—
It’s a war in my chest that the dawn won’t allay.
You were the harbor I wrecked on the shore,
And I am the wave that can’t reach anymore.
I know you hate me for letting go first,
I drank the goodbye, now I’m dying of thirst.
And I don’t want forgiveness—I want you to see
There’s no happy ending for someone likeme.
I know I shouldn’t miss you… but I do.
